Rita Sala Treig

b. 1994 | Barcelona
‘Over the past year, I have focused my research on the space of painting, approaching it from a more material, almost physical perspective. I am interested in how the surface can transform into a place, and how that place, in turn, can open up a fictional space that moves between figuration and abstraction.

I work with layers and depths that accumulate, constructing a visual territory where the weights of each representation seem to shift, as if searching for
their own space. Within the space of painting, times become confused, intertwined, interrupted. What happens inside the image does not follow a line, but unfolds through multiple temporalities. At times, I have the feeling that each layer belongs to a different time, and that the painting itself tries to hold them all at once. I constantly ask myself what happens within images and within the imaginary spaces they create.

Perhaps that question is the driving force behind my practice. Along this path, my research has turned toward the search for an image-symbol: a form that aspires to the universal through abstraction, capable of containing multiple meanings while also sustaining itself in a raw space, without the need to explain. I think of painting as a place where matter, time, and thought meet — a space where the visible and the mental intertwine, where gesture coexists with memory. Between the layers, I try to create a zone of resonance: a place to look, and perhaps, to imagine anew.’ - Rita Sala Treig
