Laia Garcia Adell
b. 1997 | Spain
Laia Garcia develops an artistic practice centred on the tension between figuration and disfiguration, creating images that oscillate between the body, the symbolic, and the fantastical. Rooted in figurative painting while resisting fixed notions of form, her work understands the image as a mutable space where organic elements coexist with structural, angular, and material interventions that introduce a sense of artifice. Her work draws on the legacy of artists such as Victor Willing, Paula Rego, and George Condo, while sharing an interest with a generation of contemporary painters in approaching the figure as a site of transformation rather than representation.
In recent years, her research has shifted from the depiction of the human figure towards the construction of new corporealities capable of engaging with traditional pictorial genres such as portraiture, still life, and religious painting.
Working primarily in oil, Garcia follows an intuitive process in which memory, emotion, thought, and lived experience converge within a distinctive visual cosmology. Guided by curiosity and a constant openness to change, she approaches painting as a space where imagination reshapes what the image can hold.
Her practice is shaped by a continuous back-and-forth of recurring elements that reappear, shift and evolve across different bodies of work. These forms coexist and interact within her paintings, generating spaces of thought where meaning remains open, fluid and in constant transformation. Through the materiality of oil paint, Garcia investigates layers of sensuality, psyche and mourning.
Recent exhibitions include Tetramorfo at La Masía Gallery (Urvanity Projects, Barcelona), Univers-bloc at BETA Contemporary and El lugar equivocado at Espacio La Hipoteca, Madrid. In 2025, she was awarded the CCA Andratx Residency Award, culminating in her participation in the 2026 exhibition In Praise of Uncertainty at CCA Andratx, Mallorca.
