Jan Vallverdú

Jan Vallverdú began his artistic journey at a young age, quickly moving from drawing at home to painting murals on a monumental scale. The expressive freedom and physicality of mural painting continue to inform his practice, shaping a visual language that balances spontaneity with the discipline of studio painting.

Through dynamic figuration and layered symbolism, Vallverdú explores existential questions and the complexities of the human condition, addressing both personal experience and broader social concerns. His paintings capture bodies in constant transformation, favouring ambiguity over fixed representation and revealing the tension between light and shadow, control and chance.
Working primarily in oil, he embraces a process of layering that allows ideas and forms to emerge gradually. His paintings evolve through experimentation, navigating the space between intention and accident while remaining grounded in a strong conceptual framework.

Jan Vallverdú’s work process is characterized by a combination of spontaneity and introspection. He draws inspiration from his subconscious, capturing preconceptions and existential questions through sketches and drawings done at night or while traveling. These initial ideas serve as a starting point for his paintings, which evolve through constant experimentation and refinement. He navigates the tension between intention and accident, allowing his paintings to evolve organically while retaining a strong conceptual framework.

Rooted in graffiti and muralism yet deeply engaged with the possibilities of painting, Vallverdú has developed a distinctive visual language characterised by bold, expressive brushwork. His practice brings together gestural immediacy and quiet introspection, creating works that invite viewers to confront the emotional and psychological narratives embedded within them.

In 2025, Vallverdú's solo exhibition Not Yet with BETA Contemporary was awarded the Wittmore Prize as part of the Art Nou Festival. The same year, he was selected for the La Brea Studio Residency by Danny First in Los Angeles. Alongside solo exhibitions across Spain, Italy, Denmark, and the United States, Vallverdú's work has been featured in international art fairs, including ARCOlisboa with BETA Contemporary. A forthcoming solo exhibition in Taipei further extends the international scope of his practice.
