Gabriel Pinto
b. 1998 | Caracas, Venezuela
Gabriel Pinto is a Venezuelan artist and cultural researcher who lives and works between Caracas and Barlovento. Informed by visual anthropology and long term fieldwork, his practice is shaped by proximity: time spent with communities, attention to their forms of labour and transmission, and a commitment to the places that hold their histories. Working across photography, sound, and visual arts, Pinto builds projects that function as living visual memory, where the image is not only evidence, but a site of continuity.
His work is driven by an insistence on heritage as something active. Tradition, in Pinto’s practice, is not a relic to be safeguarded at a distance, but a knowledge that is adopted in the body, carried in speech, and remade through repetition. He follows how culture moves from one generation to the next, changing as it is learned and practiced, without losing its grounding in place. In a Venezuela marked by crisis and migration, this focus takes on urgency.
Youth appears in his work as the generation of relay, those who inherit practices and decide, through daily choices, how they will remain viable in the present. The historical lineages present in the territories he studies, including Afro descendant histories, remain part of the work’s horizon without narrowing it to a single identity frame.
